Following Philippe Starck

For the Royalton’s renovated lobby, Focus Lighting uplit teak screens and hung glass pendants that seem to do all the work.

The Royalton’s lobby renovation, by Roman and Williams, set out to be as memorable and dramatic as Philippe Starck’s original design1. Two teakwood beaded screens flank the main entry and are dramatically uplit to show their geometry1.

Throughout the lobby, hand-blown glass pendants seem to bathe guests in their glow, while carefully concealed fittings actually do the lighting1.

From the project

It is a neat trick, and an honest one to point out: the pendants are the character, the hidden lights are the illumination.
