Trace the old frame

At Gasholders London, custom lenses keep the light on the ironwork and out of the flats.

The Gasholders at King’s Cross retain their industrial silhouette after dusk.

The aim at Gasholders London was to give the structures a strong identity and reveal their industrial heritage, while thinking about the people who live inside them1. Warm light is grazed up the front face of each column, using a custom detail with multiple lensed LEDs that keeps the light on the architecture and out of windows and the sky1.

The project won an IALD Award of Excellence in 2019. The jury called it ‘an enticing concept realized absolutely into an enthralling reality’1.

From the project

Inside, the atria are washed with tunable white light from a concealed cove, programmed to shift with the time of day1. Wedge-shaped landscape elements carry linear lighting underneath, so that from the upper floors residents look down on forms that echo the landscape around them1.
