A hillside of luminous trees
At 1000 Trees, each planter is treated as a pixel in one night-time image, and every tree had to be lit without glare.
Like a real mountain, the planting at 1000 Trees is banded by altitude, and the changing leaf shapes meant each band needed a mix of uplighting and cross lighting from neighbouring planters1. Doing that without glare into the many terraces and viewpoints took a full three-dimensional focus plot for the whole site1.
The studio says it wanted the planters to act as individual pixels within the full external image1.
From the project
On the south side, the building cuts into the ‘mountain’ to reveal glowing panels of urban art and advertising, and lighting the artworks there connects the site with the neighbouring M50 Art District1. The studio also set out to encourage people to use the streets around the building after dark1.
