Around a pool and a pavilion, small step lights mark each change in level, and the water and the fire do the rest.

Kichler lists deck and patio lighting alongside its path lights1; step lights are the part of that range that marks a change of level. In the image, the fire and the pool are the brightest things in the garden, and the lawn beyond is left dark.
